She sat in class chatting with her friends as her conversation echoed across the room. Wearing a grey SC State crewneck and a khaki SC State hat Jaylaan seemed very alert and prepared to start her day. The 20-year-old Charleston native is a 2013 graduate of Goose Creek High school were she participated in the ROTC program.
Despite the early morning workout calls her love and dedication for ROTC earned her a scholarship from the Bulldog Battalion, where she is now ranked as a MS3. "Being involved with them was challenging at first because it's my first real taste of the Army life, its a whole lifestyle change. It's kinda hard balancing Army life and college life at the same time but you get use to it after a while."
Not only is she a member of The Bulldog Battalion, Jaylaan is apart of the South Carolina State University Student Government Association Student Senate. They tackle issues in the constitution and eliminate any loopholes. Every home basketball game you can expect to see Jaylaan on the floor at the basketball game keeping the crowd entertained at halftime and timeout opportunity.
Balancing ROTC, SGA, and hosting basketball game seems like a to carry but she seems to be handling it flawlessly. Upon graduation in May 2017, Jaylaan plans to continue the army lifestyle. Once she graduates she will be commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the Army. She plans to enter the signal corp which is the technical side of the army. Her end goal is to own her own radio station.
